P.A.S.S. is a term that can be associated with sports, particularly football, soccer or rugby. But it’s also a term applied to the process used to extinguish a fire when using a small fire extinguisher.
The acronym P.A.S.S. refers to the four-step process to properly use a hand-held fire extinguisher when you are about to battle a blaze:
P: Pull the pin. The pin located on the handle keeps you from accidently discharging the extinguisher until you are ready. The pin must be removed for the fire extinguisher to properly function. Sometimes, there is a thin plastic tamper-proof chord holding the pin in place. It easily breaks when the pin is pulled out.
A: Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire. It is vitally important to direct the extinguisher’s spray towards the material that is actually burning. Do not aim into the flames, but rather at the base of the flames so that the spray can extinguish the flames.
S: Squeeze the handle of the portable extinguisher a safe distance from the flames. This causes the extinguishing material (which can be carbon dioxide, monoammonium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium chloride and other chemicals) to discharge from the extinguisher. A note of caution: If you are using a carbon dioxide extinguisher, avoid touching the horn-shaped discharge nozzle, as it can cause frostbite.
S: Sweep the extinguisher from side to side across the base of the fire. Make sure the extinguishing material completely covers the burning material and puts out the fire. Keep an eye on it for a while in case hot spots flare up and cause the fire to start burning again.
These four steps are used when putting out a small fire: P.A.S.S. – Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep. If you are unsure about putting out the fire yourself, or if the fire has engulfed a larger area that cannot be handled with a small extinguisher, immediately call the fire department.
