Equipment Needed to Pour Concrete

When you are about to pour concrete, you need to be prepared to work quickly and have all of the tools ready that will enable you to complete a quality job.

Concrete Vibrator In addition to personal protective gear – gloves to protect hands from potentially caustic mixtures, safety glasses to protect eyes from flying or aerosol debris, rubber boots that are easily washable after the job is done, as well as tape measures, moisture readers, levels and other hand tools – heavier equipment is recommended to quickly and efficiently complete commercial and residential concrete construction projects.

The recommended equipment includes:

  • Mixers – portable mixers for small jobs and to supplement mixing trucks.
  • Plate compactors – Prep the subbase of the area where the concrete is to be poured. The compactor helps compact and settle the stone or aggregate and levels the pour area. They are perfect for backfilling along foundations and compacting materials in trenches.
  • Compact rammer – The compact, walk-behind rammer come in a variety of sizes, weights and horsepower for compacting small and large areas prior to concrete pours.
  • Levels – Both the subbase and slab surface must be level. A standard long-line level, or a laser level, will let you verify that the slab is completely to spec before and after pouring.
  • Saws – Reciprocating saws, circular saws and grinders are needed to cut rebar and forms on the jobsite. Concrete saws are used if a problem develops underneath the dried slab and it needs to be broken up and removed for a repour.
  • Street Saws – Street saws cut up to four inches below a concrete slab’s surface and are used to define areas for chipping and breaking concrete for repairs or adjustments.
  • Air Chipping Hammers – An electric hammer is ideal for breaking up concrete.
  • Hammer Drill / Rotary Drill – The hammer drill or rotary drill is used to break up concrete. Placing concrete anchors or doing relative humidity testing requires drilling into a cured concrete slab. The drills make the process easier by combining rotation with percussion – a pounding motion that breaks up the concrete faster for easier installation.
  • Air compressor – An air compressor is required to operate hammer / rotary drills.
  • Core Drill – The core drill is perfect for drilling reinforced concrete, bricks and other building material for ventilation and plumbing channels, waste evacuation pipes, barriers and road signs.
  • Vibrators – Electric and gas-powered concrete vibrators help release trapped air pockets and excess water from the concrete mix to prevent possibly compromising problems in medium to high slump concrete.
  • Concrete buggy – A concrete buggy is used for concrete spreading and spot pouring, as well as landscaping, material subbase distribution, job site cleanup and material transport.
  • Power Trowel – A walk-behind power trowel provides industrial-strength concrete and mortar smoothing power.
