It can be exasperating to call a sales representative about equipment availability and to ask for a quote, and to wait hours for a return call.
It does not make any sense.
Surprisingly, this is not unusual. Recent studies show that average sales return call time is three hours and eight minutes.
When equipment is needed urgently on a job site, or a last-minute quote is required for a bid, the delay is unacceptable. The longer you wait, the less productive your operation.
So, how do you convey urgency?
You do so by stating the facts. When calling a rep, leave a message that explains your need and deadline, such as: “I need a 200-size excavator tomorrow at 6 a.m. on my job site. I need it for three days. When can you deliver it?” In 10 seconds, you have also conveyed your sense of urgency.
A responsible rep should call you back immediately with equipment availability information and a quote.
Sometimes reps can be outside of cell phone coverage area or inside a building that blocks cell reception. Texting the rep reinforces the urgency and may ensure that your message is delivered if they have Wi-Fi service.
We all operate on time schedules and must meet deadlines.
