When ground was broken to expand the Winn Army Community Hospital in 2012, it paved the way for the March 2015 opening of state-of-the art treatment facilities and new entrance to the Fort Stewart medical facility near Hinesville, GA.
The 65,000-square-foot certified LEED Silver project upgraded the Winn Army Hospital with additional new space for a physical and occupational therapy clinic, an orthopedics and podiatry unit, a behavioral health clinic and a social work clinic.
Extensive site utility and infrastructure relocation was required on the hospital expansion project, including primary power and communication loops, demolition of existing buildings, relocation of mobile MRI facilities and additional infrastructure to support temporary clinic space.
Infrastructure systems were installed in a newly constructed service tunnel. Mini-excavators were used to excavate the trenches. Compact compaction equipment was used to tamp down the soil and rock foundation to prepare the area for concrete floor and wall pours.
Mini-excavators were also used to dig out an area that would eventually become an elevator shaft for the multi-story hospital addition.
All equipment that was delivered to the project met stringent safety requirements, including being equipped with fire extinguishers, operator manuals, flashing lights, as well as being double-checked for operational reliability.
The project was constructed while the hospital was operational, and presented several challenges – limited laydown yard and limited maneuverability of equipment. The use of the mini-excavators helped to overcome the space limitations.
Neff Rental’s Savannah, GA, branch delivered and serviced the mini-excavators and compaction equipment used to build the Winn Army Community Hospital project by the general contractor and subcontractors.
