Renovations Turn Out To Be a Real Hole in One

When the TPC Scottsdale golf course was being made over by a golf course construction contractor in 2014 under the direction of former golf pro turned architect Tom Weiskopf, the project called for a specific type of vehicle.

golf courseIn addition to traditional earth moving equipment – backhoes, dozers, mini-excavators and excavators – the contractor required a dump vehicle that was no wider than a golf cart path in an area of the course where a standard five-yard dump truck would not fit. Fortunately, it was available through a local rental company, keeping the grass around the path from being crushed by a heavier vehicle.

The TPC Scottsdale golf course is the home of the 500,000-fan Waste Management Open, a PGA tournament played on Super Bowl weekend. The course is best known for its unique par three 16th hole, which has a covered stadium and amphitheater seating lining the sides. To say that it is noisy as pro golfers approach the green would be an understatement.

While the construction job left the 16th hole untouched, the green on 17, which pro players have complained about for years due to its poor play-ability, was made over. Weiskopf designed a new green, and the contractor used dozers and compacting equipment to reshape it and make it more playable.

Three other greens were also relocated, and all of the course’s greens were resurfaced. All tee complexes were reshaped and redressed, fairways were renovated, and bunker complexes were reshaped and relocated.  Car paths were replaced and the desert area around the golf course was re-landscaped during the seven-and-a-half month renovation.

The course was reopened in October 2014. The extensive renovations that involved earth moving and contouring, trenching a new irrigation system, and compacting the fresh soil to lay acres of new grass, have made the course more modern and offering state-of-the-art play for golfers.

With systematic construction phases and tight deadlines for the golf course renovations, there was no room for downed or poorly operating equipment. Neff Rental delivered quality late-model earth moving and compacting equipment, as well as the small dump vehicle for the TPC Scottsdale golf course redevelopment project.
