From 2012 to early 2015, there was a type of music being played in Charleston, SC, that was unfamiliar to the refined ears of most theater and concert patrons. It was the sounds of excavators with hammers pulverizing concrete of the former Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, saws screeching through rebar, dirt and rock thumping into the bottom of dump trucks, and the throaty roar of diesel engines as equipment accelerated around the new Gaillard Performance Hall work site.
For about three years, contractors and construction workers raced to raze the outdated municipal auditorium and raise in its place an elegant, state-of-the-art $142 million performing arts center. Situated on a slice of a city block, the compact job site was adjacent to a nearby school, apartments and homes, and was bordered by streets on three sides packed with cars during school and rush hours. It was as challenging to maneuver equipment, schedule deliveries and service equipment as it is for professional musicians to play Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29.
With practiced skill and extraordinary conducting, the Gaillard Performance Hall rose from the rubble and opened with a 1,800-seat elegant music hall, 16,000-square-feet of meeting, exhibition and convention space, and 7,300-square -feet of terraced lawn space. The LEED-certified building also accommodates 1,700 people for banquets.
