Vacant land around growing urban universities is not only difficult to find, but a challenge to build on when it is available. Such was the case in February 2013 when construction started on the $36 million Circle University City project at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to serve the surging student population.
The 4.7 acre site was planned for 187 one-, two- and four-bedroom luxury apartments in four, five-story buildings. The compact job site was challenging not only for staging construction equipment and building materials, but it needed to be finished in time for students to rent the apartments by August 2013.
The project involved clearing land, digging a foundation, pouring concrete, building concrete block walls, erecting framing, as well as installing electrical and plumbing systems.
Subcontractors used rollers, excavators, forklifts, track skid steers, and various aerial lifts to complete the job.
The apartment complex opened as UNCC students were arriving on campus for the fall session. The Charlotte Neff Rental team enhanced the job site’s safety by hosting a forklift safety meeting for three subcontractors. The project was completed in part because the branch offered reliable equipment, delivered it on time and provided 24/7 service.
