A railroad bridge and intermodal rail abutment spanning a small cove at the Alabama State Port Authority facility in Mobile was recently completed that will connect five national rail systems to an intermodal rail facility scheduled for first-phase completion in 2015.
The 1,300-foot, $11.5 million Garrows Bend Intermodal Container Transfer Railroad Bridge, partially financed by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER discretionary grant program, is a key component to building out the 62-acre Garrows Bend Intermodal Container Transfer Facility and connect it with BNSF/AGR Railway, Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern Railway, which serve the Port of Mobile.
Started in June 2013, the Garrows Bend bridge system is comprised of a marine mattress protected by an earthen dike and a rail bridge that spans an inlet in a cove. The rail tracks are still to be installed atop the dike to connect rail systems coming into the Port of Mobile from the north to the intermodal rail facility currently under construction to the south.
Equipment used to build the rail system and bridge included a wheel loader with eight-foot hydraulic grapple forks, which was used to offload and laydown marsh mats, steel beams, rock sacks and other materials; a mini-excavator with a hammer, which drove supporting spikes 15 feet into the earthen dike to support the rail ties, as well as rivet busters, pumps and other small equipment.
A pivotal decision to use a long-reach excavator over a crane with clam-shell scoops to precisely place rip-rap along the dike wall likely saved thousands of dollars in time and assisted with the on-time completion of the project.
