When Airbus Group was searching for a location for its first U.S. assembly plant primarily for its A321, its largest single-aisle jet, the European aerospace company was attracted to a former U.S. Air Force base in Mobile, Alabama.
Encouraged with state and local financial incentives, Airbus broke ground on its $600 million facility in 2013. The first U.S.-made Airbus commercial aircraft, an A321, is scheduled for delivery in early 2016. By 2018, the facility is projected to produce between 40 to 50 single-aisle aircraft each year, will create about 1,000 jobs and bring Airbus suppliers to the Mobile area.
In 2013, contractors broke ground for the 210,000 square-foot hanger assembly building, a control tower, several smaller warehouse and office buildings and an apron to park finished aircrafts adjacent to the main runway on a 53-acre parcel inside the Brookley Aeroplex, which is owned by the City of Mobile.
Dozers were used to clear and level the land, excavators dug the building’s foundation, mini-excavators were used to dig footings and trenches for electric and water utilities. Water trucks rolled across the construction area, keeping dust down and helping to settle the soil. Rollers and hand-operated jumping jacks compacted the soil to prepare it for the concrete foundation.
As slabs were poured for the building and aprons, concrete vibrators were used to settle the concrete and remove air bubbles.
To erect the hanger assembly building, 7K, 9K and 12K four-wheel-drive forklifts were used to offload material from vehicles and deliver it to assembly stations. Welding units connected the assembly building’s steel beams. As the building was erected, 60-, 80- and 120-foot man lifts were used by workers for welding, exterior panel assembly and window installations.
