A New and Improved Wastewater Treatment Plant

In a growing suburban community, it’s only a matter of time before a wastewater treatment plant reaches its capacity and improvements need to be made to solve the problem.

SC WWTPThis was the case with the 41-year-old Center Street Wastewater Plant in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, a suburb of Charleston. The facility serves 18,000 businesses and residents, treating two million gallons of wastewater per day. Improvements to the plant would enable it to process 3.7 million gallons of wastewater daily.

Funded with a state revolving loan and federal EPA funds, the $27.3 million wastewater treatment plant expansion project started in July 2012 and was completed in 2015. The project involved demolition and modification of the existing plant, and the addition of treatment facilities, pumps, electrical systems, excavation, dewatering, concrete, backfill for electrical and communication duct banks, the installation of manholes and hand holes, lighting, and the construction of buildings that were architecturally similar to an elementary school adjacent to the facility.

The project was designed for greater energy efficiency with the installation of equipment that reduced electrical consumption by 36 to 71 percent using a combination of more modern equipment and a BioMix™ compressed gas-mixing system.

The rental equipment used during the project’s construction included excavators, forklifts, dozers, jumping jack and plate tamps, rollers, mini-excavators, trenchers, chipping hammers, cement trowels and vibrators, and air compressors. Light towers illuminated the construction area for the 4 a.m. concrete pours.

Due to the single-lane access into the job site and the location of the nearby elementary school, rental equipment deliveries were scheduled for specific times. This was necessary to prevent traffic jams along the main road leading to the site, as well as to not interfere with morning and afternoon school bus services.

Most of the rental equipment on the Center Street Wastewater Plant project was supplied by Neff Rental’s Charleston, South Carolina, branch. The branch ensured that deliveries were made when scheduled, provided reliable equipment and maintained the equipment 24/7 to ensure that the project met its construction milestones.
