Collier County Road Expansion

Collier County, Florida’s second largest county and home to Naples and Marco Island, has white sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Florida. Named by Forbes magazine in 2014 as one of the top cities in the country for future job growth, Naples boasts an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent, and robust growth of new homes, retail, government services and commercial developments.

Collier_County_951This explains why the well-traveled two-lane roads in Collier County – US 41 and State Road/County Road 951 (Collier Boulevard) intersection – needed to be widened. In recent years, more people have moved into the nearly 6,000 homes within a three-mile radius of the intersection, and are working in retail stores and office buildings, as well as frequenting the shopping centers in the area. This growth has created more traffic and bottle necks. The signalized Collier Boulevard intersection is also an important county hurricane evacuation corridor, providing access to northbound evacuation routes for Marco Island and other Gulf Coast residents.

In 2012, plans were drawn up to widen the intersection and the roads. In 2014, work commenced on the Collier Boulevard road project. The first phase of the 18-month project included widening the at-grade intersection to accommodate a future grade-separated overpass. A second phase of the project included resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation of Collier Boulevard for about three miles.

The project’s contractors rented dozers to grub and clear debris; loaders to remove debris from the job site; a grader to precisely level and grade the road bed; track skid steers to move piles of dirt, level the land and for minor grading; excavators to dig into dirt piles and dump them into trucks ; mini-excavators to dig out swales and remove debris before the road was paved; and light towers to illuminate the work area at night and during the early morning hours to meet Collier County’s deadline.

Neff Rental’s Fort Myers branch supplied the equipment to the contractor and provided 24/7 service and support to help ensure on-time completion of the job. Since the completion of this project, Neff Rental has opened a Naples, FL Branch to further support the growing area.
