Building hotels on military bases has become a secure and cost-effective way to provide temporary duty and transition housing for military personnel and their families.
Recently, one such facility was built on the Fort Meade, MD, U.S. Army base by IHG Army
Hotels, which owns 41 hotels on Army bases across the country. Started in May 2014, a 243-room Candlewood Suites hotel was built over a 16-month period that included a high-speed internet service, 24-hour business center, complimentary hot breakfast, 24-hour fitness center, complimentary guest laundry and spacious rooms with small kitchenettes to accommodate both individuals and families.
Construction of the four-story hotel was completed by several contractors for site clearing, concrete work, framing and electrical installation.
The job’s framing company rented 10K forklifts to move pallets of framing material around the job site, and lift the pallets to the upper floors. When the building was complete, the framers used man lifts to install windows in the building and to complete finish work inside the building.
Opened in September 2015, the Candlewood Suites now provides U.S. Army personnel with a home away from home while visiting, transitioning or on temporary duty at the Fort Meade Army base.
